Our gastrointestinal health is fundamental when it comes to minimising the prospect of developing a chronic disease.
An abundance of research implicates an unhealthy gut microbiome with a whole host of illnesses, ranging from neurological conditions to diabetes and also gut centric diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Importantly, imbalances in this part of the body can lead to fatigue and consequently, ensuring good gut health is essential in the quest to promote optimal energy levels.
The link between the gut and energy levels
Those with fatigue can experience a myriad of gastrointestinal symptoms in addition to fatigue.
Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms have been long associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia and manifest in various forms.
Bloating, food sensitivities, indigestion, abdominal pain, poor assimilation of nutrients, skin issues and mood challenges tend to feature in many patients presenting with fatigue-oriented conditions and can all stem from a malfunctioning gut microbiome.
What is happening?
Conditions known as intestinal permeability (also known as leaky gut syndrome), dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and various fungal and parasitic infections can in their own way contribute to chronic fatigue.
These issues are common drivers of chronic inflammation, thereby adding fuel to the fire and dampening energy levels.
In addition, an inability to absorb key nutrients over time due to a disturbed gastrointestinal environment can pave the way to key nutrient deficiencies which can translate to diminished energy production.
Microbial imbalances can also adversely impact the gut-brain axis and lead to a reduction in the production of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, making concentration, sleep, mental stamina and focus difficult to attain.
Testing and treatment
Clinical observations, stool, blood, urine and breath testing are all available to help diagnose any imbalances which set the stage for individualised treatment.
Working with a coach or practitioner well versed in detecting GI issues is crucial in helping to put together a plan tailored to your needs.
