Living with a chronic illness such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and others can leave one feeling incapable of doing many things due to the constant low energy and oftentimes low mood that accompanies this.
Thankfully there are things that can occupy one’s time, leading to a feeling of purpose and accomplishment. It is often the little things in life that can give us the most joy.
When energy is low, pushing through often makes symptoms worse. Instead, practicing intentional self-care for fatigue can help the body recover and improve overall wellbeing.
Why self-care matters for fatigue
Unlike simple tiredness that improves with sleep, fatigue can linger and impact every aspect of life.
There will be days when rising from bed will be an elusive goal while you may have greater energy on other days.
Giving one the opportunity to feel empowered by focusing on what one is capable of doing can lead to finding meaning and purpose in one’s day.
This can in turn make living with fatigue while addressing root causes significantly easier and improve quality of life.
Simple self-care practices for fatigue
1. Prioritise rest
Allow yourself to sleep in, take a short nap, or simply sit quietly without pressure. Rest is essential for restoring energy.
2. Create a calm space
Meditation, lighting a candle, or unplugging from devices can help reduce overstimulation and promote relaxation.
3. Gentle movement
Yoga, stretching, or walking at a comfortable pace encourage circulation and release tension without overexertion.
4. Nourish your body
Make a cup of tea, prepare a healthy snack, or try a simple new recipe. Balanced nutrition supports the body’s natural energy systems.
5. Stay connected
A quick phone call or video chat with a friend can lift your mood and provide emotional support, helping to ease feelings of isolation.
6. Explore creativity
Journaling, drawing, knitting, or baking can calm the mind and bring a sense of accomplishment without requiring too much energy.
7. Enjoy small pleasures
Listen to music, watch the sunset, or relax with a book or movie. Gentle entertainment can be restful yet restorative.
